Sloman, Sara


SLOMAN, Sara. Housewife. Born in Lithuania, daughter of Leib and Etta Rostowsky. Came to South Africa 1906. Educated at Normal College School and South African College, Cape Town. Has played leading part in women's work in Cape Town for many years and received Queen Elizabeth Medal in recognition of her services. President National Council of Women, Cape Town Branch. 1948-50; Vice-President, National Headquarters, 1957-60. Hon. Life Vice-President, Union of Jewish Women of S.A.; President, 1944-54. Chairman, Status of Women in Jewish Law Committee, International Council of Jewish Women. Chairman, S.A.N.T.A., Creche Committee, Cape Town, Vice-Chairman, Cape Jewish Welfare Board. Member of Cape Council, S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies, 1952-64; former Chairman, Women's section, S.A. Jewish War Appeal. Was appointed to the English section of the Adult Education Committee in Cape Town (now disbanded). During World War II served in SAWAS and on Governor- General's National War Fund.
