Rich, Jacob Morris


RICH, Jacob Morris. M.A., LL.B. Secretary, South African Jewish Board of Deputies. Born Hanley, Staffordshire, England, 4th March, 1897, son of Isaac and Sarah Rich. Educated at Hanley High School and Cambridge University. During First World War was Assistant Adjutant and Education Officer, Jewish Regiment (Gedud) Royal Fusiliers. Resumed studies at Cambridge after World War I. Appointed Assistant Secretary of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1923-26; Secretary, 1926-31. Editor, London "Jewish Chronicle" 1931-36; Joint Secretary, British Section, Jewish Agency for Palestine; Hon. Secretary, Jewish Historical Society of England; Secretary, Society for Jewish Jurisprudence, London. Came to South Africa 1939 to assume position as Secretary of the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies, which he has held continuously since. Married Sylvia Linken, 1940; two daughters. Add.: 17, Campbell Road, Parktown West, Johannesburg.
