Saphra, Toni


SAPHRA, Toni. Died 1967. Founder and Hon. Life President of the Union of Jewish Women of Southern Africa, Born Defmold, Germany, 24th June 1877, daughter of Abraham and Emile Plaut. Married the late Bernard Saphra in 1898, and went to live in England. Came to South Africa in 1900 and settled in Cape Town where she joined the National Council of Women and was twice elected their representative at international conferences in Oslo and Vienna. Became President of the Club of the Nine Muses, a cultural club, entertaining prominent artists, literary and dramatic visitors. Taught Girl Guides and Boy Scouts first aid, home nursing and hygiene. Was a member of the Cape Town Board of Guardians and participated in Zionist activities. During First World War undertook military service as an officer of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and spent a great part of the war years nursing. Organised an emergency hospital in the Great Influenza Epidemic of 1918. In 1931 founded the Union of Jewish Women of Southern Africa, touring the main centres and helping set up branches there; for past 34 years has served on its National Executive. Represented the U.J.W. at international conferences. The Toni Saphra Bursary (an annual award of R500 for women postgraduate students of any race, creed or colour whose course of study will enable them to serve the community) was established to honour Mrs. Saphra on her 70th birthday. Had two sons and one daughter.
