LICHTERMAN, Jakub. Cantor. Born Warsaw 1909, son of Isaac and Bella Lichterman. Educated at Krynski Gymnasium (Tarbut Seminar), Warsaw, and Warsaw Conservatorium. Came to South Africa 1947. First Canto the Vredehoek Hebrew Congregation (Beth Hamedrash Hachodosh), Cape Town. Previously First Cantor at the Nozyk Synagogue, Warsaw. Member of the Council of Jewish Ecclesiastical Association (Omer), Cape Town. During World War II took part in the uprisings in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943; spent two years in concentration camps. After the war became Chaplain in the Polish Army, 1945. Was Executive member, Central Jewish Committee, Warsaw. Member, Cape Town Concert Club. Married Maria Teitelbaum, 1945; two sons.
