Mailer, Ernest Hyman


MAILER, Ernest Hyman, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits.), D.U.C., Ph.D. (Chem. Eng.) (London). Chemical Engineer. Born Johannesburg, 27th October, 1911; son of Benjamin and Celia Mailer. Educated at Jewish Government School, King Edward VII High School, University of the Witwatersrand and University College, London. In business as a Stockbroker; previously Research Chemical Engineer with Imperial Chemical Industries, London; S.A. Torbanite Mining and Refining Co. Ltd. (at its inception in 1934): Managing Director. Kemtex (Pty) Ltd., Chemical Manufacturers. Member, Internal Management Committee, Oxford Synagogue 1953-1955. Member. Glendower Golf Club. Served with South African Engineering Corps. during World War II, commissioned 1940, attained rank of Captain, 1941, and seconded to General Headquarters as Staff Officer for Chemical Warfare, Camouflage and Air Raid Precautions; saw active service up North. Captain of University College (London) Lawn Tennis Club, 1932-1933; obtained full Colours for Tennis at London University in 1933. Married Maureen Weinberg, 15th August, 1946; two sons.
