MAISTER, Max. Retired. Born Rosalia, Lithuania, 7th July, 1870, son of Hirsch and Libah Maister. Educated in Rosalia. Came to South Africa 1890. Director of Selborne Holdings (Pty.) Ltd. Founder and former Director Maister, Ltd., wattle bark exporters and millers, Dalton, Natal; pioneers of the wattle industry in Natal. Founder, Maritzburg Hebrew Congregation; President, 1919-1927; held various executive offices prior to presidency. Was in business on the Rand, 1890 to 1900, before moving to Natal. In 1927 moved to Cape Town, where he pioneered tie manufacturing and ladies' overall manufacturing industries. Married Fanny Chaie Blumenfeld, 1903; three sons, four daughters.
