Melzer, Lionel


MELZER, Lionel, O.B.E., M.C., M.D., D.P.H. Specialist Anaesthetist. Born Johannesburg, son of Morris and Annie Melzer. Educated at Jewish Government School, Jeppe High School, University of the Witwatersrand. While at University, Captain of the Combined Universities of S.A. Athlete team. Formerly Senior District Surgeon of Johannesburg, and Senior Lecturer in Forensic Medicine at University of the Witwatersrand (1931-45). Member, Oxford Hebrew Congregation. Chairman, External Fellowship Project of the Israel Medical Association since 1954. During World War II was Officer Commanding, 11th and 20th Field Ambulance in South African Medical Corp. in East and North Africa and Europe, with rank of Lieutenant-Colonel; awarded O.B.E. and M.C. In Israel War of Independence was D.D.M.S. (second in command), Israeli Army Medical Service. Member of Maccabi and Tara Bowling Club. Married Rose Wheeler, 16th July, 1935; one son, one daughter.
