MEREINE, Israel Henry. Director of Companies. Born Russia
19th February, 1896, son of Ansel and Esther Mereine. Came to South Africa
1901. Educated at Marist Brothers' College, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Director of Spitz Mereine & Co. (Pty.) Ltd. Previously was produce merchant
in Pietersburg (1920-1927) and formerly in the Civil Service (1914- 1920).
While in Pietersburg was a foundation member of the Pietersburg Zionist
Society. In Johannesburg was foundation member of the Jewish Reform Congregation
and Balfour Park Club. Life member, S.A. Boxing Association (Amateur),
Johannesburg and District A.B.A., Cape Province A.B.A., Transvaal A.B.A.
Established Jewish Guild Boxing Section. Trained first South African team which
competed in Maccabi Games, 1935. Served with the S.A. Forces in the East
African Campaign during World War I. Married Anne Lavine, 1921; one son, one
