Mibashan, Cilian Shunamith


MIBASHAN, Cilian Shunamith. Retired Hebrew Teacher. Born Rosh Pinah, Palestine, 1902, daughter of a prominent pioneering family. Educated in Palestine at Hebrew Teachers' Seminary, Tel Aviv, and Kansas City College, Missouri, U.S.A. Two years Principal of Hebrew School in Kansas City; lectured on Jewish subjects and education; later employed by the Missouri State Board of Education. Came to South Africa 1928. Established first Hebrew Kindergarten in Port Elizabeth and organised classes in Judaica. In 1932 became Principal of two Hebrew Nursery Schools in Cape Town and trained kindergarten teachers. In 1950 joined the staff of the Green and Sea Point Hebrew School. At request of Cape Board of Jewish Education, introduced religious instruction at Ellerslie Girls' High School, Sea Point. Retired from teaching 1962. Before coming to South Africa, she was active in the Histadruth Nashim Ivriot (forerunner to WIZO) in Palestine and Secretary of the first Baby Home (forerunner of the Mothercraft Centre). In Cape Town, has taken active part in Bnoth Zion, Union of Jewish Women, Histadruth Ivrit (Hon. Secretary, 1933-37), Histadruth Hamorim; Magen David Adom. Married Dr. Jacob Mibashan, 1923.
