Michal (Michalewich), Simon


MICHAL (Michalewich), Simon, Hairdresser. Born Abel, Lithuania, 13th December, 1901, son of Micholvelve and Nechame Sheine Michalewich. Went to school in Lithuania, but his education was interrupted in 1914, when, following the outbreak of World War I, he and his late mother found themselves in Russia, isolated from the rest of their family. Learned his trade in Russia in 1916. Lived through the 1917 Revolution in poverty as a refugee, and made his way back to Lithuania, where he was re-united with his family in 1918. Served in the Lithuanian Army 1921-24. Came to South Africa 1928. Established Central Hairdressers, 211 Van der Walt Street, Pretoria, in 1930, and has run it ever since. Active member of Pretoria Jewish Cultural Club and Yiddish Dramatic Society for many years; took part in many Yiddish plays. Council member of Pretoria United Hebrew Congregation, 1964-66. Member of Adath Israel Congregation since 1928. Member, Magen David Adom, Ort-Oze, S.A. Jewish Orphanage, Witwatersrand Jewish Aged Home and other organisations. Took up body-building and weight- lifting to recuperate from ill health many years ago and soon achieved championship rank: three times Northern Transvaal Champion, and in 1960 won "Mr. Durban" title, for which he received a trophy from Rea Park (Mr. Universe). Served in the National Volunteer Brigade during World War II. Married Celia Lang, 1924: two sons and two daughters.
