Kuper, Simon Meyer


KUPER, The Hon. Mr. Justice Simon Meyer. B. A., LL. B. Died 1963. Judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa. Born Johannesburg 29th June, 1906, son of Morris and Pesa Kuper. Educated at Jeppe High School and University of the Witwatersrand, Appointed Queen's Counsel 1946 and elevated to the Bench 1955. Played a leading part from his young years in Zionist and communal life. Was Chairman of the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies 1944-49; Chairman, S.A. Zionist Federation 1950-55; Hon. Vice-President, Israeli United Appeal and S.A. Jewish Appeal; President, United Hebrew Congregation of Johannesburg, 1950-51. Represented South African Jewry at many overseas conferences; testified on behalf of the South African Jewish community to the Anglo- American Commission of Inquiry on Palestine in 1946. Was foremost protagonist of the Jewish Day School Movement; the Judge Kuper Foundation Trust of the S.A. Board of Jewish Education is named to perpetuate his memory. Judge Kuper died of a shot fired through the window of his home by an unknown assassin in 1963. He is survived by his widow (Gertrude nee Hesselson), whom he married in 1929, and one daughter and two sons.
