Laks, Richard


LAKS, Richard. Died 1967. Born Rezekne, Latvia, 23rd July, 1908; son of Abraham and Sarah Laks. Educated at Teachers' College, Riga, and Latvian University. Came to South Africa 1937. Was Managing Director, Alpine Mineral Water Works (Pty) Ltd. Previously was Headmaster of the Berea Hebrew School, Johannesburg. In Latvia was Headmaster of a primary school in Talsi and the Liberman High School. Was a member of the Executive Council of the S.A. Zionist Federation for seven years; Executive member, I.U.A.; and Executive Council member, S.A. Board of Jewish Education. Was National Chairman of the Histadruth Ivrith; and Vice-Chairman of the Cyrildene Hebrew Congregation. Was a member of the Hebrew Order of David; past Chairman, Pretoria Hebrew School; past Chairman, Cultural Committee, Pretoria Hebrew Congregation; past National Vice-Chairman, Jewish State Party and a former member of the Revisionist Party Executive. Contributed articles to various local and overseas publications and lectured on the Bible to Cyrildene Lomdei Torah. Married Celia Factor, 10th April, 1938; one son, two daughters.
