LAZARUS, David. J.P., M.P.C., C.A. (S.A.). F.R. Econ. S. Chartered Accountant. Born Kimberley 1st February, 1902, son of Isaac and Rose Lazarus. Educated at Selborne College. Member of the Cape Provincial Council since 1949. Member of the East London City Council for 30 years; Mayor, 1947-48; Deputy-Mayor, 1944-47, 1961-62; Mayor 1966-67 and 1967-68. Helped initiate the Milner Estate Housing Scheme; the Ex-Servicemen's Housing Scheme in Stirling and Baysville; and the rebuilding of the Native Location, now known as Duncan Village. Chairman for tenth successive year of the Frere Hospital Board, on which he has served for many years; the new European Hospital Block is named the "David Lazarus Ward Block." Past President and Hon. Life member of East London Association of Arts. Past President East London Dramatic Society and East London Music Club. Served Technical College Council, on Art Gallery Advisory Board, School Board; Administrator's nominee on the East London Museum Board of Trustees; member, Board of Management. Malcomess House Children's Home; member, 1820 Memorial Settlers' Association. Received the Queen's Coronation Medal and the S.A. Republic Medal for his public services and has been awarded the Freedom of the City of East London. Past Hon. Secretary, East London Hebrew Congregation. Chevra Kadisha, Zionist Association and Hebrew Order of David Lodge. During World War II served in Police Reserve, National Volunteer Brigade and 7th Battalion of the S.A. Coast Defence Corps, Life member, South African Legion, B.C.E.S.L.. Life Hon. member, S.A. Jewish Ex-Service League. Life Hon. member, R.A.F. Association.
