Herrman, Louis


HERRMAN, Louis, M.A. (Cape Town), Ph.D. (London). Retired Schoolmaster. Writer. Born Southampton, England, 1883, son of Isaac and Bertha Herrman. Educated at Hartley University College, Southampton, University of Cape Town, London School of Economics. Came to South Africa in 1907. Former Principal, Cape Town High School; Examiner in English to Joint Matriculation Board, 1947-64; Broadcaster on "Current Topics" to the Schools of South Africa, 1947-61. Author of a series of educational handbooks, "Aids to the Study of Thackeray's "The Newcomes'; R. L. Stevenson's 'Virginibus Puerisque'; 'Essays of Today': John Buchan's Hurried Escapes" (1923-26). Joint Editor, "Janus: A Bilingual Anthology" (Cape Town, 1964); Editor, "Nathaniel Isaacs Travels in Eastern Africa" (two volumes Van Riebeeck Society, 1936 and 1937). Author of "The Fantastic History of Joshua Abraham Norden" (in "Essays Presented to I. H. Hertz", London, 1942); "A History of the Jews in South Africa" (London, 1930); "Centenary History of the Cape Town Hebrew Congregation" (Cape Town, 1941); "Cape Town Jewry Before 1870" (in "The Jews in S.A." Edited by Saron and Hotz, 1955); "In the Sealed Cave: A Scientific Fantasy" (London, 1935). Has also written scientific papers for various publications and done much miscellaneous journalism.
