Hilewitz, Alter


HILEWITZ, Rabbi Alter. M.A. Born Zembin, Russia, 7th September, 1908, son of Rabbi Menachem and Nechama Hilewitz. Received his Jewish education under his father and the Chief Rabbi of Minsk, to whom he became secretary in 1927-29; was Rabbi in Russia 1931-36; then migrated to Palestine, where he became Lecturer at the Talmudical College at Haifa. Came to South Africa 1951 as Principal of the Rabbi Judah Leib Zlotnik Seminary for Hebrew Teachers. He is now also Principal of the Rabbinical Seminary in Johannesburg and Rabbi of the Johannesburg Chassidim Congregation. Served in Israel's War of Liber tion as a member of the Mishmar Haam, Jerusalem. Author of "Research in Maimonides" (1951) Punctuation of the Talmud "El Hamekoroth" (1948-52). Member of Editorial Board and Literary Secretary of "Talmudic Encyclopaedia" (1944-51); contributor to "Encyclopaedia Hebraica" and various scholarly publications. Received Rabbi Kook Award 1951.
