Isaacs, Barney


ISAACS, Barney. Died 1964. Born Newstadt, Latvia, 27th September, 1887. Came to South Africa 1902. Educated in Latvia and in Klerksdorp, Transvaal. Owned and conducted Lucille Ladies' Dress Shop in Potchefstroom. Previously was grain and wool buyer in Maquassi and for many years Mayor of that town. Was member of Wolmaransstad Hospital Board, Executive member of Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce for fifteen years. Was Executive member, Potchefstroom Hebrew Congregation, for twenty years, Hon. Treasurer for five years; Committee member, Potchefstroom Zionist Organisation, for twenty-five years. Was Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Red Cross and received Red Cross Certificate of Merit for twenty years' continuous service. Was Chairman of the Sheltered Employment Committee, and Committee member of Potchefstroom Country Club. (In 1963 was made Hon. Life member of the Club.) Vice-President, Western Transvaal Rugby Union. Served with the Pretoria Regiment during World War I, and in Civic Guard during World War II. Member, M.O.T.H., Freddy Theron Shellhole. Married Fanny Gabbe, 1922; two daughters.
