Goldberg, Solomon


GOLDBERG, Solomon. (Died 1967) Born in Prusanu, Russia, 1897, son of Itzchak Joshua and Malke Goldberg. Went as a child with his parents to Palestine, where he was educated at Hebrew School and at the Mikveh Israel Botanical College. Served as a botanist on the Baron Edmund de Rothschild Plantation at Petach Tikvah. Came to South Africa in 1903 and settled in Durban, where he became a leading figure in Jewish religious life. He helped to organise the Durban Jewish Benevolent Society, the Talmud Torah and the Zionist Society, the Board of Schechita, the Durban Mizrachi and various study groups. He was Chairman of the Durban Mizrachi for 25 years and Chairman of the Durban Schechita Board for 20 years. Married his late wife, 1900; four sons, one daughter.
