Guggenheimer, Hans


GUGGENHEIMER, Hans. (Died 1959.) Former Advertising Manager of the "S.A. Jewish Times". Born in Munich, Germany, 20th February, 1881, son of Benno and Charlotte Guggenheimer. Educated at the Realschule, Munich, and thereafter attended lectures at Munich University, leaving at his father's request to join the family business. Subsequently he became a trade journalist and advertising representative. In World War I, he enlisted in the Cavalry Division of the Bavarian King's Army, rising to commissioned rank and serving in France, Galicia and Russia. After the war he played a prominent role in Jewish Ex-Servicemen's Organisations in Bavaria. From 1918 to 1934 he was Advertising Manager of two leading publications, "Die Bayrische Staatszeitung" and the Berlin trade paper, "Der Confectionare". His work took him regularly to the Leipzig Fair. He came to South Africa in 1936, joining the "S.A. Jewish Times" soon after it was established and playing his part in the development of the journal as Advertising Manager, a position which he held until his death. A member of B'nai B'rith in Germany, he helped to establish the Johannesburg B'nai B'rith Lodge, in which he played an active part for the rest of his life. He was a member of the United Progressive Jewish Congregation and various other organisations. His first wife, Ida Gutmann, whom he married in 1924, died in Germany in 1936. In South Africa in 1937, he married a fellow emigre, Mrs. Antonie Spiegel (nee Oestreicher), by whom he is survived. His son, Franz, pre-deceased him in 1955. His daughter, Traudl, married his second wife's son, Peter Spiegel. They and their children live in London,
