HALBERSTADT, Manfred. Merchant. Born Hamburg, Germany 21st April, 1912, son of Siegfried and Rebecca Halberstadt. Educated in Hamburg. Came to South Africa 1934. Executive member of the Chamber of Commerce. Founder of the Graaff-Reinet Publicity Association. Founded the local Hebrew Congregation in 1947 and played leading part in building the local synagogue (1954). Organises regular services and acts as honorary teacher of the Jewish children in the town. Married 1940, wife's name Freda; two daughters. Recreation: Teaching Hebrew.
