Elton, Michael


ELTON, Rabbi Michael.  B.A. (Hons.) (Lond.), Dipl. O.A.S., A.J.C., H.C.F. Minister of Religion. Born Budapest Hungary, son of Rev. Benjamin Ehrnthal. Educated at Abonyi Secondary Jewish Day School, Budapest; Jews' College, London; University of London; School of African and Oriental Studies, London. Came to South Africa in 1954 and was Senior Minister to the United Progressive Jewish Congregation of Johannesburg; Principal of the Progressive Seminary and Chairman of the Central Ecclesiastical Board until he returned to London in 1963. Formerly Minister of the United Synagogue, London, 1940 to 1954, and Librarian of Jews' College, London, 1947-1954. Du ing World War II served as Jewish Chaplain to the British Forces in England, Germany, Austria, Italy and Hungary. Author of "The Challenge of Destiny" (1961); Contributor to Jewish and general Press. Married Vera Margery Wolff, 1940; one son.  Recreations: Music, art, photography.
