EMDIN, Samuel. Member of Parliament. Chartered Accountant.
Born Muizenberg, 1st March, 1910; son of Nathan and Bessie Emdin. Educated at
South African College School and University of Cape Town. Director of companies
in South Africa, Rhodesia and Zambia. Previously was partner in Michael Berman,
Emdin & Co.; Managing Director Charter Holdings, Ltd. and Chairman of Wits
Extensions Ltd. Vice Chairman of the United Party. Witwatersrand Finance
Committee: Member of the Witwatersrand and Transvaal Executive Committees and
Transvaal Head Committee of the United Party. Was Member of the Transvaal
Provincial Council, 1953-1961: Chief United Party Whip in the Council,
1958-1961 and its chief spokesman on financial affairs. Elected Member of
Parliament for Parktown, 1961; re-elected 1966. Has served on Select
Committees, including the Motor Vehicles Insurance Amendment Bill, 1964, and
Removal of Restrictions Bill, 1967. His Private Members motion in 1964 led to
Sectional Titles Bill, 1965. Fought successfully in Parliament in 1964 for tax
benefits for married women. Member of Greenside Ratepayers' Association,
1946-47: Transvaal Mineral. Baths Board of Trustees, 1961; Treasurer of the
Johannesburg Committee of the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation, 1948-49;
Executive member of the Transvaal Chamber of Industries, 1956-1963; member of
the Witwatersrand Central School Board and of the Governing Bodies of Parktown
Boys' High School. Roosevelt High School and Greenside High School and of the
School Committee of the Greenside Extension Primary School. Treasurer of the
False Bay Rugby Club, 1934-35. Committee member of Cape Town Jewish Orphanage,
1934-35: and Federation of Synagogues, 1948-49: Chairman of the Parkview-
Greenside and Districts Hebrew Congregation, 1946; member of the S.A. Jewish
Board of Deputies, 1948-49, and various other organisations, Member of Pirates
Club, Greenside, Johannesburg. During World War II served with the South
African Forces; discharged with rank of Captain. S.A.E.C., 1944. Married Molly
