Engel, Gershon Meir


ENGEL, Rabbi Gershon Meir. Minister of Religion. Born Satu-Mare, Rumania, 18th January, 1917, son of Shmuel Haim and Rachel Engel. Educated at Nitra Yeshiva College and Rabbinical College, Pressburg (Bratislava), in Czechoslovakia. Received Rabbinical Diploma in Pressburg, 1937. Further studies at University of South Africa, Pretoria. During World War II was put into the Hungarian Labour Camp (1942), transferred to Russia, and attached to the German O.T. and Wehrmacht. Was liberated by the Russian Army in 1945, when he joined the Haganah in Prague. Was transferred to Israel in 1948; took part in the War of Independence. In 1949 joined the Permanent Forces as a Chaplain and Administrative Officer at the Tel Hashomer Hospital till 1956, when he accepted a call from the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies to come to South Africa as a Minister. Has served the Jewish communities of Standerton, Welkom and Witbank. Member of the S.A. Jewish Ex-Service League and of the Hebrew Order of David. Chaplain to the Middelburg Military Camp. Married Adina Reich, 1945; one daughter. Add.: 3, Monterey Flats, Rhodes Street, P.O.
