Feldberg, Leon


FELDBERG, Leon. Editor, "Southern African Jewish Times" and "South African Jewry." Born Shurvilishok, Lithuania, 15th October, 1910, son of Rabbi Chaim Meyer and Sarah Miriam Feldberg. His father, a descendant of the Vilna Gaon, became Rav of Krok. Educated at Yeshivoth of Ponivez and Slabodka; received Rabbinical Diploma from the Rabbis of Yanove and Krok. Commenced journalism on the "Yiddishe Shtimme," Kovno, "Yiddishe Leben" and "Frimorgen," and "Dos Folk,' Riga. Came to South Africa 1929 and after serving as Minister and Hebrew Teacher for some time, went into business in Johannesburg. Established the "S.A. Jewish Times" in 1936 and has edited and directed it ever since. Chairman, Caxton Ltd., Eagle Press, Commercial Printing Co., Fieldhill Publishing Co. (Pty.) Ltd. and other companies. Married Sarah Kretzmer, 1933; one daughter and one son (the Springbok swimming champion, Meyer Feldberg). Recreations: Reading and travelling.
