Casper, Bernard Moses


CASPER, Bernard. Moses. M.A. Chief Rabbi, United Hebrew Congregation of Johannesburg and S.A. Federation of Synagogues. Born London 22nd October, 1917, son of Lewis Israel and Bessie Casper. Educated at Etz Chayim Yeshiva and Jews' College, London; Trinity College, Cambridge. Came to South Africa 1963. Previously was Dean of Students, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 1954-63; Rabbi, Western Synagogue, London, 1951-54; Rabbi, Higher Broughton Congregation, Manchester, 1939-51, also Director of Jewish Education, Manchester, 1948- 51. Hon. President, S.A. Board of Jewish Education; Hon. President, United Mizrachi Organisations of South Africa; Executive member, S.A. Zionist Federation. During World War II served as a Jewish Chaplain in the British Army, R.A.Ch.D., 1941; and as Senior Chaplain, Jewish Independent Infantry Brigade, thereafter. Mentioned in Despatches. Author of "With the Jewish Brigade" (1947); "Talks on Jewish Prayer" (1958); "Introduction to Jewish Bible Commentary" (1960); "Judaism Today and Yesterday' (1965).
