BLUMENTHAL, Rabbi Walter. B.A., M.A.H.L. Born Karlsruhe, Germany, 28th June, 1933, son of Armin and Gertrud Blumenthal. Came to South Africa 1937. Educated at Yeoville Boys' High School, Marist Brothers' College, Damelin College and University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg; and at the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio, in the U.S.A., where he graduated as a Rabbi. First South African Jewish student to enter the Reform Rabbinate. Minister of the United Progressive Jewish Congress Congregation of Johannesburg since 1957, and active in all phases of its work, with special reference to its youth programme, and its Alan Isaacs Camp and Camp Caplan. During 1964 ministered to Temple Emeth, Springs. Married Adele Cohen, 1958. Recreations: Bridge, swimming, philately, music, reading. Add.: P.O. Box 17100, Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
