ARKIN, Marcus. B.A.. B.Com., Ph.D. Professor of Economics & Economic History, Rhodes University, Grahamstown. Born Cape Town 1926, son of Julius and Anne Victoria Arkin. Educated at Sea Point Boys' High School and University of Cape Town. Previously Junior Lecturer (1949- 52). Temporary Lecturer (1953). Lecturer (1954- -62), Senior Lecturer (1963-65), Department of Economics, University of Cape Town. Executive Member, Economic Society of South Africa (Cape Town Branch) since 1952; Vice-Chairman, Lecturers Association, University of Cape Town: Member of Camps Bay High School Committee since 1964; Council Member, Temple Israel, Cape Town, 1965- 66; Member of its Finance, Youth and School Board Sub-committees. Awarded a travel grant by the British Council in 1958, his researches among the records of the English East India Company in London resulted in the publication of "John Company at the Cape" (1960) for which he received the Founders Medal and Prize of the Economic Society of South Africa "in recognition of outstanding research in the field of South African economic history". Senior bursaries from the National Council for Social Research promoted further work in this field and led to the appearance of two sequels, "Supplies for Napoleon's Gaolers" (1964) and "Agency and Island" (1965). Besides his interest in the early commercial history of the Cape Colony, he is the author of numerous papers which have appeared in the South African Journal of Economics and other local and overseas learned journals on the development of economic thought and on various aspects of Jewish economic history.
