NATHAN, Emile, Barrister, K.C., J.P., Chevalier, Consul for Greece. Born in Graaff-Reinet, Cape Province, on 23rd December, 1859, and educated there and in London (Gray's Inn). Married in 1884 to Lizzie Godfrey. M.L.A. for Von Brandis, Johannesburg, continuously since 1910; Director of the South African Mutual Life Assurance Co., Ltd.; for many years Committee Member of the old Witwatersrand Hebrew Congregation and successfully negotiated the union of the President and Park Synagogues; was Registrar in 1880 to the late Mr. Justice Simeon Jacobs, and also to Sir John Buchanan; was Deputy Sheriff at Port Elizabeth from 1884 to 1889, and also Solicitor there of the Cape of Good Hope Bank; held the rank of Captain in the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles, of which he was one of the founders.
