OCHBERG, Isaac, Timber Merchant: Commissioner of Oaths. Born in Uman, Kieff, Gub., Russia, 1879, and educated there. Came to South Africa in 1894. Married to 1902 to Pauline Ochberg; has five children. Executive Member, Kalk Bay-Muizenberg Ratepayers' Association; Committee Member, Helping Hand Association for the last 25 years; President, Dorshei Zion Association, Capetown; one of the three members of the Cape Executive of the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies; Member of the Committee of the Cape Jewish Orphanage for the last 18 years (since its inception), President for nine years; Trustee, Cape Jewish Old Aged Home. Successfully undertook single-handed the transportation of about 200 pogrom orphans from Eastern Europe to this country, under the auspices of the Cape Jewish Orphanage, Cape Town, and the S.A. Jewish War Victims Fund, Johannesburg. In 1922 went again to Russia under the auspices of the Conference Universelle Juive de Secours, Paris, as Chairman of a delegation. Travelled throughout the starving areas of Russia, distributed great quantities of food, clothes, medicaments to the starving people, and by doing so, saved many thousands of valuable lives.
