FRIEDLAND, Herman, Agent. Born in Namakston, Lithuania. Father: R. Gerson Mindis, a merchant and cultured Talmudist, who officiated for many years as Kaziony Rabbi; studied in different Yeshivas, especially in Slabodka, also in Berlin and Frankfort. Married in 1895 to Anna Rosenzweig, well-known communal worker; has one child. Came to South Africa in 1897. Founded the Chevra Shochrei Torah in Cape Town in 1899; Chairman Dorshei Zion in 1906. Came to Johannesburg in 1907; was one of the founders of the Chevra Shochrei Tesheya. Chairman of the Haivreya; Committee Member, Jeppestown Congregation and Jeppe Talmud Torah; Member of the Council of the United Talmud Torahs; Committee Member, Johannesburg Hebrew College; Delegate to the Board of Deputies. At twenty-two began to write to the Hebrew Journal Hamelitz. Since in South. Africa has written in practically all the leading journals of this country, mostly advocating Jewish rights.
