Sowden, Lewis


SOWDEN, Lewis. M.A. Journalist and Author. Born Manchester, England, 1905, son of Jacob Isaac and Henda Sowden. Came to South Africa 1911. Educated at Germiston High School and University of the Witwatersrand. Foreign Editor and Theatre critic, "Rand Daily Mail." Past President, South African Society of Journalists. Vice-President (former Chairman) South African P.E.N. Centre. Served in Civic Guard during World War II. Publications: Politics: "The South African Union" (1953); Poems: "The Charmed Fabric" (1943). "Poems with Flute" (1955), "Poems from the Bible" (1960); Novels: "The Man Who Was Emperor" (1947), "Lady of Coventry" (1949), "The King of High Street" (1950), "Tomorrow's Comet" (1951), "Family Cromer" (1952), "The Crooked Bluegum" (1955), "Kop of Gold" (1956); Plays: "The Fugitives" (1934), "The Man in Checks" (1935), "Red Rand" (1937), "The Gold Earth" (1944), "Ramses the Rich" (1,955), "The Kimberley Train" (1958); Biography: "Both Sides of the Mask" (1964). Married Dora Leah Levitt, 1936. Recreations: Walking, English flute. Has now settled in Israel.
