Reichenberg, Gustav


REICHENBERG, Captain Gustav. M.A.I., C.H.A.A. M.S.H.A.A. (U.S.A.). Audiologist. Born Heidelberg. Transvaal, 16th June, 1903, son of Jacob and Miriam Reichenberg. Educated at Marist Brothers' College, Uitenhage; pursued further studies in London, Amsterdam and Paris. Hon. lecturer to clinics for the deaf. Executive member, S.A. Jewish Ex-Servicemen's League, for 18 years and its Chairman for five years. Represented the Ex-Servicemen's Rehabilitation Committee on the S.A. Jewish Board of Deputies; representative of the Jewish Combined Welfare Organisations in the Cape. During World War II enlisted as a Private in 1939, saw service up North, Intelligence Corps, promoted Lieutenant 1941, Captain 1942, and returned to S.A. to D.H.Q. in Pretoria, O.C. High Grade School of Ciphers. Only Jewish officer on staff of Chief-of-General-Staff. Acting Lt.-Col. under G.O.C., C.G.S. Demobbed 1946 with rank of Captain first reserve of Officers. Represented the O.F.S. on S.A. National Amateur Boxing Association, Johannesburg. Married Mollie Esther Goldblatt, 1933; one son. Recreation: Welfare work.
