Kemelman, Yehoshua


KEMELMAN, Yehoshua, Rabbi. M.A., D.Litt. Born Jerusalem, Israel, 19th July, 1921, son of Jacob and Hinda Kemelman. Educated at Slabotker Yeshiva, Central Universal Yeshiva "Merkaz Harav", Jerusalem; University of South Africa; Graduate School of Yeshiva University, New York; and University of New York. Candidate for a Ph.D. Degree at the University of Cape Town. Ordained Rabbi by Central Universal Yeshiva, the late Chief Rabbi of Israel, Dr. I. Herzog, the Rosh Yeshiva of the Central Universal Yeshiva, Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Charlap, the Rosh Yeshiva of the Meah Shearim Yeshiva, Rabbi Joseph Gershon Horwitz, and the Dianim of the Supreme Beth Din of Jerusalem. Came to South Africa 1949. Rabbi of the United Hebrew Institutions, Germiston. Previously was General Secretary of the Mizrachi Organisation and Director of Mifal Hatorah, Central Torah Foundation for the Yeshivot in Israel, Haifa; one of the founders and leaders of the Mizrachi Youth Movement in Israel; Rabbi of the Zichron Shimon Synagogue, Jerusalem; Rabbi of the Potchefstroom Hebrew Congregation; Rabbi of the East London Hebrew Congregation. Rabbi of the Germiston Hebrew Congregation. Contributor to English and Hebrew journals in South Africa and other countries; author of two scholarly works. Married Zahava Burenstein, 1947, one son, two daughters. Has accepted a call (end 1967) to Sydney, Australia.
