Finger, Chaim Simon Ber


FINGER, Chaim Simon Ber. (Died 1967) Director of Companies. Born Biers, Lithuania, 5th October, 1885, son of Yitzchok and Eko Finger. Educated at Yeshivot in Biers and Baisk-Courland. Came to South Africa 1902. Director of 40 companies (financial, industrial, nursing homes, townships, cold storage factories, farms, etc). Life President of the first Orthodox Beth Hamedrash (negotiated the sale of the original Fox Street property, costing £3,200, for a total of £110,000). Served 11 years on the Chevra Kadisha, of which he is a past President, and participated in negotiations with the Municipality for the West Park Cemetery. Donated the Simon Finger Talmud Torah to Cyrildene Hebrew Congregation. Member Wolmarans Street Synagogue for thirty years; life member of Beth Hamedrash Hagodel, Gemillus Chasodim and several other organisations. Freemason since 1921. One of the founder members of the National Party. Married the late Leah Smith in 1907; one son, two daughters. Remarried 1959 to Bertha Horwitz, daughter of the late Joseph Horwitz, pioneer of Klerksdorp.
